The Problem Caused by Illiteracy

Illiteracy means inability to read and write one's mother tongue. An illiterate person is ignorant of modern scientific achievements. Poverty and population explosion are the main reasons of illiteracy. Children of workers, peasants, weavers, potters, blacksmiths have to think of earning before they are able to think of learning. These people cannot afford to send their children to school. illiteracy hampers national progress. Illiterate people are not aware of their political and social rights and obligations. They cannot efficiently discharge their duties. Only forceful and continued efforts can wipe out illiteracy. The mass media can persuade these people to receive education and to send their children to school. As primary education has been made free and compulsory, it is expected that illiteracy will be completely eradicated from the country soon.
